The Science of Life
Ayurveda, which in Sanskrit means "Science of Life", is an ancient system of traditional Indian medicine dating back over 5,000 years. At its heart are the three Doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — the vital energies that govern all physical, mental, and emotional processes. Each person possesses a unique combination of these three principles, called Prakriti (innate constitution), which determines individual characteristics and predisposition to certain imbalances.
Vata
The Principle of Movement
Elements: Air + Ether
Qualities: Light • Dry • Cold • Mobile • Subtle
Seat: Colon, bones, skin
Vata is composed of Air and Ether (Space). It is the principle that governs movement, communication, and creativity. People with Vata predominance tend to be slender, enthusiastic, and creative, but may suffer from anxiety and irregularity when out of balance.
Pitta
The Principle of Transformation
Elements: Fire + Water
Qualities: Hot • Oily • Light • Intense • Sharp
Seat: Small intestine, stomach, liver
Pitta is composed of Fire and Water. It is the principle that governs transformation, digestion, and metabolism. People with Pitta predominance are intelligent, determined, and passionate, but can become irritable and inflamed when out of balance.
Kapha
The Principle of Structure
Elements: Earth + Water
Qualities: Heavy • Cold • Moist • Stable • Slow
Seat: Stomach, lungs, joints
Kapha is composed of Earth and Water. It is the principle that governs structure, stability, and nourishment. People with Kapha predominance are calm, loving, and resistant, but can become lethargic and attached when out of balance.
The Balance of Doshas
Every individual is born with a unique proportion of the three Doshas, called Prakriti. This innate constitution determines our physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. When the Doshas are in balance, we experience health and well-being. Imbalance (Vikriti) manifests when one or more Doshas accumulate in excess, causing specific disturbances. The goal of Ayurveda is to restore and maintain natural balance through diet, lifestyle, herbs, and purification practices.
