Ayurveda and the Three Doshas

The Science of Life and the Balance of Constitutions

The Science of Life

Ayurveda, which in Sanskrit means "Science of Life", is an ancient system of traditional Indian medicine dating back over 5,000 years. At its heart are the three Doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — the vital energies that govern all physical, mental, and emotional processes. Each person possesses a unique combination of these three principles, called Prakriti (innate constitution), which determines individual characteristics and predisposition to certain imbalances.

The Balance of Doshas

Every individual is born with a unique proportion of the three Doshas, called Prakriti. This innate constitution determines our physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. When the Doshas are in balance, we experience health and well-being. Imbalance (Vikriti) manifests when one or more Doshas accumulate in excess, causing specific disturbances. The goal of Ayurveda is to restore and maintain natural balance through diet, lifestyle, herbs, and purification practices.
